It’s Not All About You!
The Secret Joy of Practical Humility
by Daniel Aaron Cohen
Read by Daniel Aaron Cohen
It’s Not All About You! The Secret Joy of Practical Humility offers readers simple, easy paths to a happier life, addressing the lack of humility in our society and how it affects our mental health. With a robust sense of humor, the book details scores of paths to humility — or “mental happiness tools” – to help readers and the mental health professionals who work with them cope with life’s problems in a healthier way. It alleviates the anxiety, depression and anger we all face, maximizing happiness as part of the Positive Psychology movement.
Written by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who’s been utilizing the paths to humility in his own personal life and private practice for many years, It’s Not All About You! will lead readers to enjoy life more, freeing them from the stress caused by thinking too high, too low, or too often of themselves.
In addition to the author’s own insights, the book draws from a wide variety of sources, with quotes from Jerry Seinfeld, Mark Twain, Woody Allen, and Jimi Hendrix along with deep thinkers like the Dalai Lama, Michael Singer, Zora Neale Hurston, Mother Teresa, and many others. It also draws from the wisdom of Twelve Step programs and can be especially useful to those who are “working the steps.”
Although It’s Not All About You! was written by a pastor, it speaks to believers and non-believers alike due to the writer’s eclectic background, with Masters degrees in Journalism, Divinity and Social Work, and a BA in Religion from Columbia University that focused on Zen Buddhism.
It’s Not All About You! is the first in The Happiness Through Humility Series. Subsequent books are in the works on: 1) Accepting what we don’t like about life but cannot change, and 2) Being thankful for everything we do like. Books on Humility in the Workplace, Relationships and Spirituality will follow.

“I loved this book! Not only did it teach me how to cope with life’s ups and downs better, it made me laugh many times. The author’s humorous anecdotes combined with his sense of humor were a big plus. That said, the most important thing for me was the 70 humility paths or what the author calls “mental happiness tools.” They made me look at life in a different way. Now I’m not so mad at the things other people do, and I find my anxiety has decreased as I now accept my proper place in the universe as someone who is both special and yet just a part of the great mosaic of life. I couldn’t recommend this book more highly! Thank you! Thank you!”

“Daniel Cohen’s first book is a tour de force that was born out of his personal and professional experience as well as his groundbreaking research in the area of humility. It’s Not All About You! is not your typical “feel good” book with little practical effects on your daily life. This book is in essence a roadmap for deep joy and fulfilling personal development. Cohen’s idea to organize it into multiple paths is brilliant. Those paths not only lead to wisdom but also offer a sort of personal life curriculum that people can embrace to become better selves. The crescendo of data, information and knowledge about the practical aspects of humility included in the paths makes this book a must read for people who are intentional about becoming more productive, more altruistic, and more effective in dealing with life challenges. It’s Not All About You! is ideal for people who are looking for a serious and practical personal development book. It can also be very helpful for psychotherapists who work with patients dealing with issues related to humility. Ministers may use it to teach about humility, and college professors can use it on their social work or psychology classes. Even business leaders should encourage their employees to read this exceptional book.”

“In these times of rampant egocentricism and unbridled consumerism, little is devoted to that virtue known as humility. Thankfully, Daniel Cohen’s new book entitled It’s Not All About You!, The Secret Joy of Practical Humility brings humility to the forefront and points out how being humble can improve our lives. Daniel Cohen who is a Protestant minister and social worker, draws from his personal experiences, his knowledge of religion and his training as a therapist to provide examples, insights and paths to cultivate humility in our everyday lives at home and at work. This deceptively simple book filled with humor contains paths and exercises for developing humility which leads to better interpersonal relationships and happier lives. This is a book meant to be shared and reread.”
